Rough Terrain Cranes

A rough terrain crane is a type of hydraulic crane designed for on and off road use. They are self propelled as opposed to truck mounted cranes, consisting of a single cab on a rotating superstructure. A sturdy undercarriage with two axles and huge rubber tires with plenty of tread make these cranes able to operate even in extremely difficult circumstances when the terrain is uneven and rough.

While a few rough terrain cranes have speeds that can allow them to be driven on roadways, most rough terrain cranes are restricted to jobsite use only and must be transported on a low-rider to the place of use. Other restrictions may be in place at a city, state or country level regarding street use of rough terrain cranes, since visibility form the crane cab can be limited on the side of the crane where the boom is located. Some manufacturers have attempted to increase visibility and offer "Full View" cabs, but the heavy axle weight still prevents most rough terrain cranes form being welcome on public roadways.

Rough terrain cranes are most often used for pick-and-carry operations, and are employed for building bridges, carrying out day to day operations in power and chemical plants and refineries, and for assisting with material shifting during large-scale construction projects. Rough terrain cranes range in size and can lift anywhere from 30 tons up to 150 tons. Outrigger supports can be extended to provide extra stability and to level the crane on uneven ground so it won’t overbalance and tip during hoisting.

Rough terrain cranes generally offer 4 wheel drive and multiple steering modes to provide the ability to maneuver easily when the crane must operate in tight quarters. This same feature also provides better management of slick, sloping or rocky terrain, which can be handled more easily with a rough terrain crane that with a standard truck crane which would require extensive site prep.

One of the most popular manufacturers of rough terrain cranes is Grove, part of the Manitowoc family of crane manufacturers. Rough terrain cranes from Grove feature rugged deep box section frames which are made to stand up under the harsh tough conditions found at many job sites. Rough terrain cranes can look similar to a crawler crane, with a hydraulic telescoping boom and a single engine that powers both the crane and the undercarriage. The most obvious difference is the heavy tires on the rough terrain crane as opposed
